Spring Road Weight Restrictions: What Homeowners Need to Know

Every spring, as temperatures rise and the frost begins to leave the ground, road conditions temporarily change — and so do the rules.
Typically from early March until late April, seasonal road weight restrictions are officially in effect across Wisconsin and Minnesota. These restrictions typically last 6–8 weeks, depending on weather conditions.
Why Do Weight Restrictions Happen?
When frost thaws in the spring, the ground underneath roads and driveways becomes saturated and unstable. This creates what’s known as “soft subgrade” conditions.
During this time:
- Asphalt and concrete are more vulnerable
- The base beneath your driveway is softer than usual
- Heavy loads can cause rutting, cracking, or premature damage
Even a well-built driveway can be stressed under excessive weight during this thawing period. To learn more about how your driveway’s structure affects its durability, see our guide to repairing cracks in your asphalt driveway.
What Should You Avoid?
To protect your residential asphalt paving investment, we strongly recommend postponing any deliveries that require heavy trucks to drive onto your driveway during restriction season.
This includes:
- Dumpster drop-offs or pickups
- Appliance deliveries
- Lumber or building material deliveries
- Concrete or landscaping supply trucks
These vehicles carry significant weight and can cause unnecessary wear during this fragile window. If your driveway has already sustained damage from heavy loads, you may need to consider professional asphalt repair services to restore the surface.
What’s Safe?
Normal traffic is perfectly fine.
- Personal vehicles
- Postal service trucks
- Standard Amazon/UPS/FedEx deliveries
These lighter vehicles do not typically pose a risk.
Protecting Your Driveway
Spring weight restrictions are temporary — but damage from heavy loads during thaw season can be permanent. A little patience now can help extend the life of your driveway and prevent an avoidable replacement later.
If you’re unsure whether a delivery may be too heavy, it’s always better to ask or consider having materials dropped at the street instead of directly on your driveway.
As always, we’re here to help protect your driveway replacement and keep your investment performing at its best. If you have questions, feel free to reach out! Whether you’re in Wisconsin or Minnesota, our team is ready to help.
