Properly installed asphalt driveways should last between 20-30 years
Cracks or movement in asphalt is completely normal, especially for driveways in Minnesota and Wisconsin that experience drastic changes in temperature and heavy rain- or snow-fall. The typical cause of cracks is expansion, often due to weather conditions. Up here in the north, we experience freeze-thaw cycles that cause hard surfaces like asphalt and concrete to crack under the pressure as the earth moves. These cracks will get bigger over time if left unsealed. Other factors like tree roots, underground utility trenches, rodent tunnels can also play a part in cracking. Crack filling should be a part of your annual maintenance plan.
After completion you will need to stay off the driveway.
-You can walk on the driveway the following day.
-You can drive across the driveway into your garage after 3 days.
-We recommend waiting at least 2 weeks before you park on your new driveway.
Asphalt takes about 2 years to fully harden. Tire marks and indentations are common during the summer on fresh asphalt from parked cars and power steering turns.
The first summer is the time to use extra care and educate friends, family and delivery drivers. We do not cover scuff marks and indentations in our warranty and will not compromise the integrity of your driveway. They will become less noticeable over time.
You can buy driveway crack filler at any hardware store. Or you can hire a seal coating company to fill cracks for you.
1- Remove debris from cracks.
2- Apply crack filler into the crack.
We don't recommend sealing a driveway. We feel that it will not prolong the life of your driveway. We do recommend filling cracks as they develop over a ¼ inch wide.
Through 46 years of experience we strongly believe residential driveways should be 3” after compaction. Many paving companies cut corners here.
Yes! It may lighten the color of your driveway but salt will not erode asphalt like it does on concrete.
In most cases 4-6 “ will be sufficient. There are areas in our service area that have very bad clay subsoil where 6-8” would be more beneficial for longevity.
Some cities require driveway permits and others do not. If you need a permit in your neighborhood we will handle it on our end and provide you with a permit.

For driveways in our northern climate we feel like asphalt is the better choice.
It is easier and less expensive to repair and much more cost effective than concrete for projects the size of driveways. Concrete is excellent for sidewalks, aprons and patios. We offer both services and can help guide your decision making process.
